…Look for the bare necessities, the simple bare necessities, forget about your worries and your strife…
What do you want? What do you need? I’m actually serious right now. Tell me what you really want and
we will send it to you right now write them down. Is the list long? Does it look like this?
Now that you have done that, look at that list once more and ask yourself this question, ‘What can i do without for a while?. Everyday as humans, we deal with various choices especially if we have to forego having something in order to get something else. Most times, this foregone choice is always a Want. It is something we can do without, something you’d love to have but you won’t die without. The other thing we choose over the foregone one, is usually a Need. A Need is a necessity, something you truly cannot be without. There are times when wants become needs and then you have to choose the greater want (say for example, either a new apartment closer to your place of work or a car to drive a far distance from the old apartment to work) between two wants.
Again i ask, what do you need? Are you still with your list? Do you have a fresh sheet yet? Does it look like this now?
You need to figure your needs and wants. In order to help you out, ask yourself these questions:
- Can i do without with this item?
- Will it make my living any easier?
- Is this a priority or at the top of my priority list?
- Will buying this prevent me having money for my priorities?
Having asked yourself these, look at that list again and start putting items under wants and needs. Your list should look like this when you’re done:
”… when you find you can live without it, and go along not thinking about it, i’ll tell you something true, the bare necessities of life will come to you…”
